Things Have Been Hectic: The Wonderful Illustrations of Polly Guo

Illustrator/artist/animator Polly Guo has stolen my heart. Her artwork often captures the most intimate moments in LGBT life in a whimsical yet romantic way. Well...at least the life gay geeks like me dream about having. These are the types images that drew me into Polly's rich and diverse world. But, in truth, Polly Guo's illustrations have no such boundaries. She is just as adept at drawing western themed graphic novels as she is at modern super heroes and cartoons.

Currently, Polly Guo makes her home in the LA area where she works on the beloved cartoon Adventure Time. In the past, she has done work for StoryCorps animated shorts and FoxADHD, including the This Week In History GIF series. She has also done comics and  graphic novels for Archaia, Image, and BOOM! Studios.

Her list of titles includes Houdini & Holmes, a graphic novel series in which Houdini is accused of murder and seeks out Sherlock Holmes help in clearing his name, The Hair-Raising Tale of Gabriel Birdsong, Adel's Hammer, Morningstar, and the yet to be published Strongman and Pianist.  Via email,  Polly also added, "I'm doing a comic for Pam Buchanam's Divinity Reimagined anthology based on the Ba She legend. It's about a snake that's so big it eats elephants. It takes 10 years for the elephants to pass through its body. I've also boarded a Digital Graybles short for Adventure Time that's currently in production. It's about Death. Most recently I've done an erotic comic about a girl who gets taken to a sexy spa by her best male friend called Ben's Day Spa."

Polly studied animation at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Though prior to that, she was mostly self-taught. Via our email conversation, she explains, "My first tablet was a small 4 inch Chinese writing tool that we originally bought for my Grandma to write Chinese characters on the computer. I'd steal art supplies from my public high school's art dept and paint still lives at home alone. Some times I'd go to figure drawing classes on weekend hosted by the local community college."

When asked how to pronounce her last name, "I’ve heard it pronounced several different ways, so it doesn’t matter too much to me. My two preferred ways are “G’whoa” and “Go." I think I am going with G'whoa! It just seems fitting based on her talent.

If you would like to explore Polly Guo on your own, I suggest you start with her website Pollums.com, Tumblr, and Behance. Also, check out this great interview from Graphic Policy.

Book Preview: "Big Is Better 2" Erotic Graphic Novel

On November 1st, Bruno Gmünder is releasing the follow up to the 2013 hit graphic novel Big Is Better. Brilliant artist Song is back at the helm for the second installment. This time around writer XH4M is helping out with story and dialog. The plot still focuses on Sam, the tender, muscular giant, and Pete, the enormously well-endowed boy. In the first book, the two find each other despite being banished from the gay community and cast out by the world at large.

Big Is Better Vol. 1
In this new volume, we see more of the sinister world behind Sam's size, strength, and learn about a few of his other special powers. The book is filled with water tanks and holding cells full of muscle bound giants, each with slightly different attributes. Some have horns. Others wings. Others multiple genitalia. We meet the scientists behind the mutations along with the money man paying for the research (and a hint at his nefarious plans).

Also, we get to see a lot of interaction between Sam and Pete. While eating dinner and hanging out with each other, Pete watches with a sense of foreboding as Sam 's mind seems to be far away as new powers manifest themselves. It is as if Sam goes into auto-pilot mode while someone else steers the ship. But, each time, Sam re-emerges from the dream like state and the two continue to feel drawn closer and closer to each other.

As this is an erotic graphic novel, there is some pretty strong sexual content. But, unlike many other graphic novels, Big Is Better 2 never loses sight that it is a story driven by plot and character development. The sex titillates and arouses for sure. There's tons of over-sized members to be seen. But, the sense of desire and longing between the characters makes it a bit more tender and endearing than the books where everyone is just doing each other just for the sake of doing it.

Big is Better 2 is a pretty good read, even if you never read the first volume. You can preorder the hardback edition at the Bruno Gmünder website or here in the US via Amazon

Gay Comic Geek Reviews: Poseidon-T Graphic Novel

Check out our favorite Gay Comic Geek reviewing Poseidon-T graphic novel by Franze. If you haven't checked out his YouTube channel, you probably should! Also, we have a great video of some of the artwork in Poseidon-T by Franze himself.

Here's the plot ...
Poseidon is the star of his rugby team, and the fans love him. Especially the young handsome Gonzales, dreaming of more than just a meeting with Poseidon. One day, while big game, his dream becomes a reality - but differently than expected - because aliens are attacking the world.

You may remember Franze from his work on graphic novel Black Wade. This time around, Franze tackles this story and illustrations without Black Wade writing partner Andärle. Refreshingly, Poseidon-T gives us much less sexual content and focuses much more on the wonderful story. It's rare to find a gay comic so well written.

The book is available through German publisher Bruno Gmunder. But, it might be cheaper and faster to get it through Amazon here in the US.

Gay Comic Geek Reviews: Black Wade 'The Wild Side of Love' Graphic Novel

Check out our favorite Gay Comic Geek reviewing Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love X-rated graphic novel by Franze and Andärle. If you haven't checked out his YouTube channel, you probably should!

According to the press materials, the dreaded pirate Black Wade has a cruel mind and an explosive
sexuality. His legendary ruthlessness comes through an encounter with Jack Wilkins falter. The young English lieutenant has an impeccable character and a warm heart. Both are prisoners of their fate; overwhelmed by the passion they finally unite in the struggle for freedom and love. But, this story goes far beyond this over simplistic explanation. The art is vibrant and lush. Some of the best we have ever seen in this genre.

Franze and Andärle are actually illustrators of comics and books for young people. Now the two Italians have tried on her first homoerotic project.Their style - refined and very carefully in detail - puts much emphasis on the description of the atmosphere and environment. Thus, the people and their story seem real, the reader can put themselves directly in the action. With a lot of sense for the adventurer in us Franze and Andärle draw us into a world full of explosive passion and wild feeling. You can learn more about them at Jimbocomics.

The book is available through German publisher Bruno Gmunder, but it might be cheaper and faster to get it via Amazon.com here in the US.
