Book Preview: Mentaiko Itto's "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" English Language Translation

Hooray for publisher  Bruno Gmünder! Starting back in 2015, they teamed up with gay manga legend Mentaiko Itto to start translating his works into English. Initially they released the wonderful series Priapus.  Now they are back at it with The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The new collection is completely uncensored and includes stories "Hamu and the Boy Who Cried Wolf," "Holy Night," and "As Swift as Lightning."

And once again, staying true to the traditional manga format, as soon as you crack the cover, there is a big note saying, "This book was published in the original Japanese right-to-left format. Please flip the book over and start from the beginning!"

Inside you will find a few notes from Itto on each of the stories, here's my favorite. This is introduction to "Hamu and the Boy Who Cried Wolf":
JAPAN’S CULTURE IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, SO I’M WORRIED ABOUT HOW WELL THE STORY COMES ACROSS. ALTHOUGH PEOPLE ARE GROWING MORE UNDERSTANDING, EVEN NOW THERE’S STILL CONSIDERABLE DISCRIMINATION AND PREJUDICE, SO JUST COMING OUT TO YOUR PARENTS OR YOUR FRIENDS TAKES QUITE A BIT OF COURAGE.
ACTUALLY, WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL, EVEN I ACTED LIKE I WAS STRAIGHT, TELLING LIES TO EVERYONE ABOUT WHAT GIRLS I LIKED. BECAUSE OF THIS, WHEN FRIENDS CAME OUT OR CONFESSED THEIR FEELINGS TO ME, I COULDN’T LET MY REAL SELF OUT, AND JUST LIKE YUUDAI, REGRETFULLY, I HURT THEM. BECAUSE THESE REAL EXPERIENCES FORMED THE BASIS OF THIS STORY, MORE THAN MY OTHER WORKS, I THOUGHT MAYBE I SHOULD LET A BIT OF REAL LIFE INTO THIS ONE. ANYWAY, THESE DAYS I’VE COME OUT TO MY PARENTS AND FRIENDS AND, WITH NOTHING TO HIDE, I HAVE A GOOD LIFE AS MY REAL SELF.
Bruno Gmünder has been kind enough to share some preview artwork with us. Of course, we can't show you all of the sex stuff, but I assure you it's in there. All three stories are a great mix of sex and sincerity, sweetness, and lots and lots of erotic fantasy.

The Boy Who Cried Wolf is due out December 1st. In North America, you can pick up a copy at Amazon. The book is in traditional black and white print paperback.

Mentaiko Itto's Gay Manga Priapus Finally Released in English Language Anthology

Gay manga fans rejoice! For the first time ever, Mentaiko Itto's Priapus is getting an English language, completely uncensored release thanks to publisher Bruno Gmünder! This 160 page anthology includes Priapus I, II, & III, plus the additional stories Gachinko Battle, 1000 Meters Deep, and 1/4.

One thing I really love about this anthology is the fun surprise waiting on page one. As soon as you crack the cover, there is a big note saying, "This book was published in the original Japanese right-to-left format. Please flip the book over and start from the beginning!"

Another thing I love is getting to hear from Itto himself in the afterword:
Good day. Nice to meet you.
I'm Itto, though abroad I'm probably better known as Mentaiko.
I'd heard that books published abroad often don't require censoring the genitals. But in Japan they do. Sometimes this is just a small revision, and other times they cover up the whole thing. Having to cover up those genitals that I'd worked so hard to draw always made me sad, but knowing everything I drew will now be on full display makes me so very happy.
To think, if you loved my characters, even just a little bit, that'd be so nice...
Bruno Gmünder has been kind enough to share some preview artwork with us. The stories are a great mix of sex and sincerity, sweetness, and lots and lots of erotic fantasy. Itto's artwork is even better than his storytelling. The images seem to spring to life and practically jump off the page. Once you start reading Priapus, you probably aren't going to want to put it down.

Priapus is due out in June. You can pre-order it in the US at Amazon or order a copy directly from Bruno Gmünder.
