Must Watch: "Sticks and Stones: Bambi Lake" Documentary

Director/Filmmaker/Musician Silas Howard's latest documentary covers the mesmerizing life of of Bambi Lake, a landmark transsexual punk rocker from San Francisco’s fringe art scene. Howard’s documentary has Lake herself recount the story of a young woman who winds up in the midst of a red light district lifestyle in San Francisco and somehow found her ways on stage opening for David Bowie. The 15-minute film touches upon the early, pre-AIDS epidemic queer scene filled with promiscuity and hustling that Bambi called home.

From the official description:
“Every street has a story.” Sticks & Stones is an intimate documentary about a song, a street, and a diva. Bambi Lake, a notorious San Francisco transgender performer and entertainer, takes us on a stroll down Polk Street, sharing anecdotes and the history behind her song "Golden Age of Hustlers," which was written about her time as a street hustler in the mid-70’s. She landed on Polk Street after a stint with the Cockettes and prior to regular gigs at renowned 80s/90spunk venue, the Mabuhey Gardens.
Honestly, I was in awe of the stories of hanging out with Bowie and Iggy Pop in Europe. The insane list of lovers, friends, and mentors, some in the punk scene, some not, includes Henry Rollins from his Black Flag days, Exene Cervenka from X, The Stranglers, Ginger Coyote, and so many more.  But more touching are the tales of being a stripper, friends passing away, homelessness, transgender struggles, and now being banned from some of the bars and clubs that she loves.

In the interview with Pitchfork, Silas Howard talks about his involvement with the early San Francisco queer community and his role as a guitarist in the queer punk band Tribe 8. When asked about his first time meeting Bambi, Howard said, “I went to the gay pride parade and all of a sudden there was this commotion on the sidelines and there was this tow truck pulling a fake cop car, and it was surrounded by all these punks and drag queens with baseball bats and high heel shoes smashing the cop car. And then in front of it it said "NO APOLOGIES, NO REGRETS." It was this really wild, good-looking, sexy, performative group of people that were very irreverent. The humor was really gallows humor. For myself, I was 18, and knew "that’s my people."

Silas Howard has been named the first Trans director of Jill Soloway’s original Golden Globe winning and Emmy winning series Transparent. He is also known for directing Hudson Valley Ballers, award winning, Sundance premiered By Hook or By Crook, SXSW-premiered Sunset Stories, and is currently working on a musical film for legendary artist Peaches.

Sticks & Stones is totally worth fifteen minutes of your time. Watch below.

Monday Morning Dance Party: Kylie Minogue + Garibay "Black & White"

Check out the video for the track "Black and White" off the new Kylie + Garibay EP! I love this EP because it shows a bit of a darker, less bubblegum side of Kylie. Doesn't hurt that Fernando Garibay is as talented as he is adorable! Oh...and Giorgio Moroder helps out on some of the tracks on the new EP!

Our New Favorite Thing: Denis Spichkin's "Space Cats!"

All hail Helsinki, Finland based artist/illustrator/animator Denis Spichkin. As the Lead Artist for Gameloft, one of the largest mobile game firms in the world, he has been responsible for bringing happiness to millions and millions on their smart phones and tablets. On a more intimate level, Denis has been sharing some of his doodles, illustrations, and WIPs on his personal blogs.

All of his work is amazing, but the series that really caught our eye is Space Cats! This really needs to be said in a deep booming tv announcer voice: SPAAAAAACE CATTTTS! These intergalactic felines fly their rocketships through space fighting evil wherever it may lurk. At least I think they are fighting evil. I mean, they are cats after all. It is quite possible they are the ones bringing terror to the universe.

Anyway, take a look! If you want to learn more about Denis Spichkin on your own, check out his Blog, Behance, and Tumblr!

Safari Urbain/Parisian Wildlife: The Projection Art of Julien Nonnon

French artist Julien Nonnon has been lighting up the streets of Paris with a series of breathtaking photo projections featuring animals clad in human clothes illuminated on facades of buildings through an embedded video-projection system. As the co-founder of Le3 design studio, Nonnon has collaborated on many art projects combining street-art, kinetic installations, digital creations and video-mapping. Thanks to a portable on-board beamer, he can project his work in any place that inspires him. His current project is called Safari Urbain/Parisian Wildlife.

Nonnon explains the project like this:
SAFARI URBAIN is in line with this approach and is born of a fierce desire to take the works to the streets, confront them directly to urban wildlife and make them reachable without degrading the walls. Leaving without a trace.
These ephemeral graffitis, short-lived souvenirs for the passer-by, are captured by the artist, named after the streets, mapped and will be printed full size on art paper, thus immortalizing this phantasmagorical menagerie.
This bestiary coming right out of fashion magazines, questions our behavior, our ambivalent desire to be both unique and wanting to belong to a well-defined group. In our way of dressing, we express our vision of the world, while indirectly revealing our social position and financial power. Fashion is nothing other than a means of communication, of integration and belonging to a group. Thus, the artist denounces, through his anthropomorphic creatures such urban myths and social influence which can lead to conformity.
If you would like to see the entire collection, visit Julien's website! Nonnon has also provided this handy map of where the projections have made appearances!

Book Preview: Photographer Mark Henderson's "Lap of Luxury"

Lap of Luxury, photographer and art historian Mark Henderson's upcoming coffee table book of the male form, is exquisite. This is perhaps the most mature, well thought out collection of photographs I have had the pleasure to experience. Henderson brilliantly uses natural lighting and well appointed surroundings to capture his models in a stunning and spectacular fashion. The preview images below are but a tip of the iceberg.

Lap of Luxury is Mark Henderson's seventh coffee table book. Some of his other titles include Luminosity, Household Idols, Suburban Pleasures, and Poolside. His work has also been featured in Men: Twenty Five Years in Photography and various anthology books published by Bruno GmĂ¼nder, including Beautiful Vision, Jewels, and Brief Encounters. There are a ton more, but the list would become far too long! Mark's work also appeared regularly in Men, Freshman, and Unzipped magazines, and my images have been featured in Männer, DNA, The Male Form, Display, Romeo and lots and lots of other publications.

Lap of Luxury is due out November 1st from German publishing house Bruno GmĂ¼nder. In the US, it might be easiest to preorder a copy from Amazon. If you'd like to learn more about Mark Henderson, check out his Website!
