BBC World Service Discusses Discrimination With Gay Football Club London Titans

Recently, the BBC World Service interviewed LGBT football club London Titans about discrimination, comradery, and the vocal minority who would see them fail. All the while, the Titans participate in three levels of competitive soccer so that everyone of any ability gets a chance to play. And, of course, as with most LGBT sports clubs, the Titans do a lot of charity fundraising to give something back to the community that supports them.

Anyway, take a listen to the interview. It's pretty great, especially the part where the Titans' players admit the best revenge for name calling is beating an opponent on the soccer field.

Things Have Been Hectic: The Wonderful Illustrations of Polly Guo

Illustrator/artist/animator Polly Guo has stolen my heart. Her artwork often captures the most intimate moments in LGBT life in a whimsical yet romantic way. Well...at least the life gay geeks like me dream about having. These are the types images that drew me into Polly's rich and diverse world. But, in truth, Polly Guo's illustrations have no such boundaries. She is just as adept at drawing western themed graphic novels as she is at modern super heroes and cartoons.

Currently, Polly Guo makes her home in the LA area where she works on the beloved cartoon Adventure Time. In the past, she has done work for StoryCorps animated shorts and FoxADHD, including the This Week In History GIF series. She has also done comics and  graphic novels for Archaia, Image, and BOOM! Studios.

Her list of titles includes Houdini & Holmes, a graphic novel series in which Houdini is accused of murder and seeks out Sherlock Holmes help in clearing his name, The Hair-Raising Tale of Gabriel Birdsong, Adel's Hammer, Morningstar, and the yet to be published Strongman and Pianist.  Via email,  Polly also added, "I'm doing a comic for Pam Buchanam's Divinity Reimagined anthology based on the Ba She legend. It's about a snake that's so big it eats elephants. It takes 10 years for the elephants to pass through its body. I've also boarded a Digital Graybles short for Adventure Time that's currently in production. It's about Death. Most recently I've done an erotic comic about a girl who gets taken to a sexy spa by her best male friend called Ben's Day Spa."

Polly studied animation at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Though prior to that, she was mostly self-taught. Via our email conversation, she explains, "My first tablet was a small 4 inch Chinese writing tool that we originally bought for my Grandma to write Chinese characters on the computer. I'd steal art supplies from my public high school's art dept and paint still lives at home alone. Some times I'd go to figure drawing classes on weekend hosted by the local community college."

When asked how to pronounce her last name, "I’ve heard it pronounced several different ways, so it doesn’t matter too much to me. My two preferred ways are “G’whoa” and “Go." I think I am going with G'whoa! It just seems fitting based on her talent.

If you would like to explore Polly Guo on your own, I suggest you start with her website Pollums.com, Tumblr, and Behance. Also, check out this great interview from Graphic Policy.

The Gay Sweater: The World's First and Only Gay Object!

So, you gotta check out this great video from The Gay Sweater! The Canadian Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity got tired of hearing people say "that's so gay" when describing something negative that they decided to make the world's only object that could truly be defined as "so gay." It's a sweater knit from 100% donated human hair from LGBTQ participants! Their hopes are to help make people more conscience of their word choices and eventually eliminate all bullying, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination in schools and youth communities.

Anyway, watch the video below. If you feel like donating a few dollars to their cause, you can do so here!

I Choose You, Marmot: Catching Up With Artist Henry Schreiber

About a year ago, we ran a story on rodent loving artist Henry Schreiber. Henry has made quite the career of inserting small woodland creatures into what might otherwise be traditional paintings. His favorite subject? The marmot (or groundhog as they are more commonly known in the Eastern US).

In the year since we last spoke to Henry, he has been busy re-imagining marmots as his favorite childhood pastimes - Pokemon, Japanese cartoons, sci-fi movies, and video games. The work you will see below was included in a recent show at Screaming Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon. The show was fittingly enough titled Dr. Groundsquirrel.

Of course, I had to ask Henry about his inspiration for the Pokemon groundhogs. He explained, "I had a Pokemon red cartridge way back in the day on the original Gameboy. So when I concept out shows, I usually come up with dozens, if not hundreds of concepts. For this, I thought it would be great to have marmots pretending to be Pokemon."

So, I just had to ask the follow up question - who is your favorite Pokemon starter?
"Charmander. Hands down."

Be sure to visit Henry Schreiber's website to view his entire body of work.  You can find prints for sale on his Etsy shop or Nuvango shop! And, there might just be an original or two still available at Screaming Sky!

I'd Prefer to Keep A Mystery: The Incredible Art of Rum-Locker!

I am totally infatuated with the work of freelance artist and character illustrator Rum-Locker. Though his abilities are highly in demand, very little is known about the artist himself, and for good reason. When we reached out to him, Rum-Locker explained,  "I am living in a country that is not really LGBT friendly and also I am still in the closet because I lived in conservative family. But I guess I am ok as long as I don't have to share my own picture, hahaha. I do hope you know my feeling about this?"

So, here's what we do know. Rum-Locker is a genre-crossing, self-taught artist who began seriously practicing his craft in 2010. He currently lives in Asia, "exactly where I'd prefer to keep a mystery for now." According to his Twitter description, he is an insect enthusiast and "hella gay." When I asked who his influences are, he responded, "Ah, my art pretty much inspired and influenced by J.C Leyendecker, Yoshinari Kou and Yoshitaka Amano. Some of my favorite artists are Nickie Charles, Butch McLogic, and also Marcus, and many more!! (oh and please correct my grammar as well, since my English is not that good)." I wouldn't dare!

Currently, Rum-Locker is working as a character designer for an indie game project called Sanctum Polis and doing some work for The Young Protector's Alex Woolfson! Since Rum-Locker can't divulge too much info about himself, we decided to ask Alex Woolfson for a short statement, and he couldn't say enough nice things:

"I had seen Rum-Locker's work on Tumblr, really liked what I saw, and a short time ago I reached out to him to see if he was available to work on some of my The Young Protectors' Kickstarter pin-up prints. Well, my printer has very specific requirements for the kinds of files they need and it turned out that he wouldn't be able to work with my printer's specs at this time—so Kickstarter was out—but I liked his work so much, I asked him if I could hire him to create something purely digital for my Patrons. Something really special.
Well, as it turns out, he was already a HUGE fan of The Annihilator (the supervillain from my comic, The Young Protectors) and so I was able to commission him to do a fully-nude, full body, Full Monty pin-up of my sexy super-villain.
And man, did he ever knock it out of the park! Such incredible detail—those beautiful eyes, the perfect expression, amazing skin and physique, down to hundreds of individual hairs. Even though it borders on photo-realistic, it still is 100% the character from my comic. The most consistent comment I've gotten from my Patrons (once they get their jaw off the floor) is "Now I totally understand why Kyle fell for him!"  He completely brought The Annihilator to life. I was over the moon with every revision he sent me while we worked together.
And on top of it all, he's a total pro. Everything was delivered on time. The few notes I had were immediately addressed. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and I'm really glad to have him as part of our team. I can't wait to see what he does with our hero, Kyle."
If you would like to explore more of Rum-Locker on your own, we suggest his NSFW Tumblr, Twitter, and his totally SFW ArtStation page! Otherwise, enjoy the art below!
