I Am In A Relationship...Is It Ok To Masturbate?

I know first hand how contentious of an issue this can be. In one long term relationship, my partner was pretty much furious with me for daring to jerk-off to internet porn during the day while he was at work. In another relationship, if we were both tired, we would each be on our own computers furiously pumping away.

So, the big question is…is masturbation a sign that something is wrong with a marriage or serious relationship?

Good news! The answer by the experts is a resounding NO! It is perfectly normal and even beneficial to relationships. And according to Dr. Michael Ashworth, Ph.D, research even shows that people who masturbate frequently have more (and more satisfying ) sex.

Ashworth explains, “Sometimes people feel that if everything was perfect in a sexual relationship, then neither partner would “need” to masturbate. Nothing could be further from the truth. Simply put, good sex begets more good sex — in all its forms. In fact, many couples masturbate together and find it a very enjoyable part of their relationship.”

Further, despite a popular misconception, masturbation most definitely doesn't count as cheating, explains noted sex educator Dr. Laura Berman. “If masturbation is something your partner doesn’t support or believe in, then that is something you certainly should discuss with him. Again, look for where those beliefs come from and what he finds threatening. Does he have religious beliefs that seem to conflict with masturbation, or does he feel intimidated or ashamed by the act itself? If it’s the latter, it’s important to talk to him and put his mind at ease.”

Berman also backs up the notion that masturbation improves your sex life. “I always say that sex works on a “use it or lose it” basis, and this is why masturbation can be an invaluable tool for couples. It can keep those sexual feelings going and it can keep circulation flowing to your hot spots, all of which translates into better and more frequent sex for you and your partner.”

So don’t feel guilty about taking a few moments to pleasure yourself. It’s perfectly healthy and in many cases, improves your overall sex life! Have at it!

Underground Gay Music Series Exclusive: A Short Q & A w/ Hi Fashion!

I don't even know where to begin when talking about the high energy, dance music, haute couture powerhouse that is Hi Fashion. So, I guess I will just start at the beginning.  Once upon a time, in a land far, far away...

The eclectic musical duo HI FASHION first crossed paths on the dance floor of a gay bar. Rick Gradone thought Jen DM was a guy and approached her with the intention of picking her up. After chatting and discovering their love of music and that they were both queer, a friendship began. Jen invited him to perform with her for a Pixies tribute night she organized as a benefit for a LA charity organization. Once he heard her powerhouse voice, he was instantly obsessed with working with her. He asked her to make a project with him to which she promptly said, “NO.” Undaunted, he wrote 3 tracks and sent them to her asking if she would listen to them. They have been working together ever since and one of those songs became the basis of “AMAZING!”

The "Amazing" single came out in 2010. In 2011, they released the EP Sprechen Sie Hi Fashion? Their incredible videos have appeared  on Perez Hilton, Gangster Says Relax, New Now Next, Out Magazine, The Advocate, and pretty much everywhere else! They are back in 2013 with a terrific new EP called You Are Gorgeous! with tons of new remixes, music videos, and dance beats you can't help but to wiggle your tush to! (pssst...you can stream You Are Gorgeous HERE!) If Hi Fashion doesn't make you smile, you are probably dead inside.

Luckily, we were able to corner Rick and Jen DM in a truck stop bathroom and force them to answer a few of our questions.

Q: You guys have a pretty amazing story of how you met. What do you think you would be doing if you hadn't had that chance encounter?
RICK: I would probably working as a janitor in the red light district in Amsterdam. Either that or a physicist. Quantum Mechanics is my SECOND favorite thing after Jen DM
JEN: I'd be doing a lot of unsuccessful decoupage.

Q: Based on your touring experience, how strong is the underground LGBT music scene?
RICK: I think its growing and thank god its because of the computer. Now with social media there is are so many ways to find your people. We find our people everyday because of it and that's INCREDIBLE. And it has also made it possible for bands like us who are totally independent to thrive and find an audience.
JEN: I concur, it's growing, it's thriving, and we are so thrilled to be a part of this movement. Anything goes these days in this industry, and there's just the right amount of anarchy that inspires us and many others to say fuck it, I'm out, I'm an artist, I believe in what I'm doing, and I want people to hear what I have to say.

Q: Ok...I have watched the You Tuk My Luk video like 10 times and I have questions. First...Who has a corded phone anymore? Second...Who has a 4 digit phone number?!!
RICK: I AM SO THRILLED BEYOND BY THIS!!!! One of my closest friends in Brooklyn still has a corded phone in fact and I find it incredibly sexy. The thought that when you are talking to him he has to sit on a chair in the kitchen boggles my mind and makes you KNOW that you are important. We laughed our asses off about the 4 digit number. I ADORE YOU FOR NOTICING.

Q: What's the funniest thing that has happened to you on tour?
RICK: We inexplicably became obsessed with DONUTS this year on tour. It turned into something that we MUST FIND when we go to a city. I think Voodoo Donuts in Portland may have won the prize for most extreme fantastic donut so far. But as far as an actual event, for me, maybe it was being proposed to after we got off stage in Sydney, Australia when we played at Mardi Gras. Naturally I accepted.
JEN: What's funny is that I've NEVER been proposed to. What the fuck--isn't that why anyone does this? :) Kidding. The funniest thing that ever happens on tour is every single thing that happens on tour--because Rick is one of the funniest people I know, and between him and our dancers, the show kind of never stops. Without laughter I don't think we could do this!

Q: Your live show seems pretty intense and also dependent on all your electronic gizmos functioning properly. Has your gear ever betrayed you on stage?
RICK: So many times I shudder to even count. One time, we had all the dancers and Jen inside of giant parachute that was supposed to explode open after a video of Godzilla played. The video played, the parachute exploded open and jen started singing.... into a dead mic. We had to stop and start the whole show over and it took 10 MINUTES to work it out. My whole life passed before my eyes in that time and it wasnt pretty. Luckily when the mic got fixed after what seemed an EPOCH, she said to the crowd, "OK. Now we are going to get BACK into this parachute, and YOU are going to pretend you have NO IDEA WE ARE IN HERE or what's going to happen OK? HERE WE GO!" Everyone screamed and when it finally opened up again the crowd went wild. THAT'S why I love this woman.
JEN: We are built to roll with it and anticipate 23-45 glitches per show- and when only 18 happen, we're like, 'what a breeze!' Not so much about electronic hiccups, but an improv moment nonetheless: when we played Austin Pride the plan was we'd be driven through the parade in this 1963 black convertible Lincoln Continental to a spot mid parade where we'd get out and sing AMAZING for the crowd, then resume our ride. Cunt, no? Well there we are, fanning ourselves, flipping our extensions, owning the bliss of being in the parade, when the car breaks down many yards before our destination....so we got out, pushed it to the side of the road, peaced out to the driver, and then vogue marched our way to the performance spot-where we sang in the middle of the street and got the whole crowd to sing with us. Yum.

Top 5 *Fake* Horror Movie Trailers!

We just cannot wait for Halloween! Seriously. We are entirely too excited. We have been watching every horror movie we can in preparation. Then we saw it. The greatest horror movie trailer parody of all time. Saturday Night Live just set a new standard in fake horror movie previews with Wes Anderson's The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders. Alec Baldwin and Edward Norton are brilliant. Seeing this made us remember all the hilarious horror oriented recuts of movie trailers over the years and we thought we would show you our favorite five!

#5: Mrs. Doubtfire
A tray full of false teeth has never been more terrifying.

#4: Home Alone
I wish they would all just disappear.

#3: Scary Mary Poppins
Little girl gets sucked up the chimney. Nobody bats an eye.

#2: Shining
Now we just wanna go listen to Peter Gabriel records.

#1: Wes Anderson's The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders
Edward Norton has never been funnier.

Monday Morning Dance Party - Lady Gaga "Swine"

A few days ago, a version of "Swine" off Lady Gaga's new album ArtPop was "leaked." This is most likely not the final album version, but a fantastic EDM extended cut of the track. Great job from Lady Gaga's marketing team "leaking" this fun dance track as a way to pique all of our interests in her new album.

Three Big Signs You Should Find A New Guy!

Maya Angelou had it 100% correct in her famous quote: “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.” If the person you have been seeing for a short while exhibits any of these three behaviors, you owe it to yourself to move on to someone who will treat you and your burgeoning relationship with dignity and respect.

1) Never Makes Firm Plans
I’m sure everyone has been here before. We meet someone we kind of like, kind of think is cute, kind of would like to get to know better. We have already been on a few dates with this person so we ask “hey, do you want to get together this weekend?” If their answer is along the lines of “maybe that could work” or “possibly, let me get back to you after I see what my weekend looks like,” then it should be clear that this person is not really all that interested in you. If they have to wait and see if their better options fall through before committing to you, there is zero hope that this relationship will ever be anything worthwhile. Do yourself a favor and break it off now. Or, better yet, find another date. That way when they come to you Friday afternoon to see if you want to do something, you can tell them you have other plans.

2) Not Introducing You Around
If you have been out more than a few times and you have never met any of his/her friends, that could be a bad sign. Sure the first few dates we all want to be alone with the person we are seeing. But after that, it only stands to reason that you would incidentally run into a friend, roommate, co-worker, acquaintance out on the town or in the neighborhood somewhere. If it becomes clear that you have not been introduced to anyone they know, it might be time to find someone new. On a similar note, if you are out in public and they run into someone they know and don’t introduce you as a common courtesy, never go out with this person again. They either don’t want to introduce you or they are just being exceedingly rude. Either way, this is not to be tolerated. Find someone better.

3) No Public Affection
People who are happily dating smile, hold hands, touch each other, bump into each other while walking. It’s cute. It’s sweet. It makes you smile when you see other people behaving this way. If you have been out more than a few times and your date is showing no interest in touching you in public (especially if they touch you in private), then they are not worthy of your time and energy. Walk away. Yes, some people are shy and quiet and reserved. Your gut instincts will let you know when it’s more than that. If you try to hold their hand and they find a way out of it, or drop it when others are around, that will tell you everything you need to know.

Why Does My Boyfriend's Penis Stink?!!

Ok. Start rejoicing. We are going to have a frank conversation about this seemingly silly subject. Too many of us have suffered in silence over our man’s junk either being too funky smelling or, worse, smelling (or, gag me, tasting) like fish. On more than one occasion I have gone to service a lover only to be turned back by an unpleasant odor, and that is putting it mildly.

The primary and most obvious reason for genital odor is poor hygiene, especially among the uncircumcised. Easy fix. If you don’t feel like embarrassing your boyfriend, simply suggest you take a sexy shower together and wash his private parts for him in a playful seductive manner. But, ultimately, if this is an ongoing problem, you might want to gently let him know his cleanliness is not up to par and it’s turning you off. Uncircumcised men need to be sure to pull the foreskin all the way back and wash the head of the penis at least twice a day.

However, there can be more serious reasons for odor. If your man washes on a regular basis and the smell keeps returning quickly, it could be a number of medical conditions. Ongoing smells can be the result of an ongoing bacterial or yeast infection. Also, Urinary Tract Infections can cause the urine to smell and as a result make the penis itself smell. If there is a persistent odor, a visit to the doctor might be in order. Also, more drastically, a fishy smelling penis can be a serious sign of diabetes called Ketonuria. But only a doctor can let you know for sure.

So, if your boyfriend is fastidious in nature about his personal hygiene and continues to smell, drag him in to a visit to the physician. No sense in both of you suffering in silence. If he is just a dirty bastard, cut him off until he cleans up his act.

Watch: Capuccino (2010) Short Film

Capuccino is a wonderful short film from French director Tamer Ruggli. Originally released in 2010, Capuccino has seen a bit of a rebirth online in 2013. The film follows teenage Jérémie as he navigates life with both a mother who is more interested in dating than raising her son and a crush on a straight classmate who seems to seduce him and then tosses him aside. It's a really well made, thoughtful film. The YouTube video has a bit of censoring in one spot. The reason is there is a bit of female nudity on a poster in one of the boy's rooms. If you want to see an uncensored version, click here. You will see what you missed, but the video quality is not as good.

Exclusive: Top 5 Horror Movie Dance Sequences!

Guest writer and movie geek Brandon A. recounts his 5 favorite dance sequences from horror movies. It's hard to disagree with his choices. From Crispin Glover's jerking spasms in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter to Mark Patton's masturbatory bedroom dance in Nightmare on Elm Street 2, you can't really go wrong. Can you tell we are getting more and more excited about Halloween?

#5: House of the Devil
This whole film is an homage to schlocky 80s horror flicks, and a goofy dance sequence was practically mandatory in the genre. This is certainly Ti West's best film to date in my book.

#4: Prom Night
I thought disco was supposed to have been dead by this point. Obviously not.

#3: Nightmare on Elm St. 2
First off... I still LOVE the first film. This one is far inferior, but this scene is perhaps the most terrifying thing about this entry into the franchise. I still cringe.

#2: Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter (Crispin Glover)
Man. I love Crispin Glover. Even when he's trying to play a relatively serious role in a relatively serious slasher, he can't help but to let a bit of the weird in. I hear they shot this to "Back in Black," which may explain why the moves are absolutely not in sync with the music whatsoever. One of the better Friday installments as well...

#1: Troll 2
So, I don't know if this is THE best, but my love for this movie runs pretty deep, so that puts it at the top. At this point, Troll 2 is a little over-saturated, but that doesn't diminish it's rank as the best bad movie ever made. All hail.

Underground Gay Music Series Exclusive: A Short Q&A w/ Beach!

Beach is the fantastic, beautiful pop music project from the musician who calls herself Bitch. She first burst onto the scene with her band, Bitch and Animal, who toured the US and Europe with Ani Difranco and released two albums on Righteous Babe Records. Bitch debuted her solo material on the legendary Kill Rock Stars. She starred as herself in John Cameron Mitchell’s (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) Shortbus, and her songs were featured on Showtime’s The L Word.

Born Karen Mould, Bitch started studying classical violin at 4, and later expanded her musical horizons by studying fiddling with Andrew Bird. Bitch also plays bass, ukulele and keytar. She describes Beach as indie-electro rock fronted by her electric violin. On stage, an Alligator triggers beats on what they call “the machine.” Together, they make some really wonderful music.

Beach's In Us We Trust  just came out in July on her own label: Short Story Records. It was a bit of a departure in sound and attitude from the earlier Bitch releases. She describes the change exceptionally well in a post on her blog. Despite all the preparations involved in getting ready to embark on a Fall tour, we were thankfully able to pull Karen away long enough to answer a few questions.

Q: You released your "In Us We Trust" video for National Coming Out Day! Tell us about your coming out experience.
Beach: I came out as an artist and as queer all in the same hailstorm of inspiration. I was about 19.

Q: Based on your touring experience, how strong is the indie and punk LGBT music scene?
Beach: I guess it's what I know, but I have managed to be a full time musician for 15 years and that is the community who has held me up through all my different phases and 9 albums of work! So yes I would say that it's strong.

Q: Did you seclude yourself in a shotgun shack in the woods to write your Pussy Manifesto?
Beach: Haha, no! Animal (my co-conspirator in Bitch and Animal) and I were spending the summer in Provincetown, MA. We were playing a free show every Sunday night at Bubala's. We hung posters all over town one week that we would release the Pussy Manifesto that upcoming week. I had not yet written the words! I love to write under pressure, and it had been brewing as an idea for a while, so I whipped it out in a similar hailstorm of inspiration.

Q: What's the funniest thing that has happened to you on tour?
Beach: Gosh. Tour is such a whirlwind--and I've been on the road so long it's hard to distill. It would involve a lot of interactions involving being questioned about my line of work, by border people and police officers, and watching their reactions to the word Bitch and my explanation of what I do. Or--it's the amazing lengths people will go to to connect, including having someone's phone number written in permanent marker right across the front of my RV.

Q: We love the new "Beach" sound. Now that some time has gone by, what is the biggest difference you've noticed since dropping the "Bitch?"
Beach: Thank you so much! While I haven't 'dropped' Bitch, she is currently happy behind the scenes, co-creating this performative pop that we call BEACH. I love the colors of BEACH. I love the metaphor of broken shells. I love the PG13 of it, while Bitch laughs knowingly, behind it all.
