I'd Prefer to Keep A Mystery: The Incredible Art of Rum-Locker!

I am totally infatuated with the work of freelance artist and character illustrator Rum-Locker. Though his abilities are highly in demand, very little is known about the artist himself, and for good reason. When we reached out to him, Rum-Locker explained,  "I am living in a country that is not really LGBT friendly and also I am still in the closet because I lived in conservative family. But I guess I am ok as long as I don't have to share my own picture, hahaha. I do hope you know my feeling about this?"

So, here's what we do know. Rum-Locker is a genre-crossing, self-taught artist who began seriously practicing his craft in 2010. He currently lives in Asia, "exactly where I'd prefer to keep a mystery for now." According to his Twitter description, he is an insect enthusiast and "hella gay." When I asked who his influences are, he responded, "Ah, my art pretty much inspired and influenced by J.C Leyendecker, Yoshinari Kou and Yoshitaka Amano. Some of my favorite artists are Nickie Charles, Butch McLogic, and also Marcus, and many more!! (oh and please correct my grammar as well, since my English is not that good)." I wouldn't dare!

Currently, Rum-Locker is working as a character designer for an indie game project called Sanctum Polis and doing some work for The Young Protector's Alex Woolfson! Since Rum-Locker can't divulge too much info about himself, we decided to ask Alex Woolfson for a short statement, and he couldn't say enough nice things:

"I had seen Rum-Locker's work on Tumblr, really liked what I saw, and a short time ago I reached out to him to see if he was available to work on some of my The Young Protectors' Kickstarter pin-up prints. Well, my printer has very specific requirements for the kinds of files they need and it turned out that he wouldn't be able to work with my printer's specs at this time—so Kickstarter was out—but I liked his work so much, I asked him if I could hire him to create something purely digital for my Patrons. Something really special.
Well, as it turns out, he was already a HUGE fan of The Annihilator (the supervillain from my comic, The Young Protectors) and so I was able to commission him to do a fully-nude, full body, Full Monty pin-up of my sexy super-villain.
And man, did he ever knock it out of the park! Such incredible detail—those beautiful eyes, the perfect expression, amazing skin and physique, down to hundreds of individual hairs. Even though it borders on photo-realistic, it still is 100% the character from my comic. The most consistent comment I've gotten from my Patrons (once they get their jaw off the floor) is "Now I totally understand why Kyle fell for him!"  He completely brought The Annihilator to life. I was over the moon with every revision he sent me while we worked together.
And on top of it all, he's a total pro. Everything was delivered on time. The few notes I had were immediately addressed. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and I'm really glad to have him as part of our team. I can't wait to see what he does with our hero, Kyle."
If you would like to explore more of Rum-Locker on your own, we suggest his NSFW Tumblr, Twitter, and his totally SFW ArtStation page! Otherwise, enjoy the art below!

Monday Morning Dance Party: Humans "Tell Me"

"Tell Me" was featured on HUMANS' debut album Noontide that released February 24th via Hybridity Music. The video features the hallucinatory journey of two Muppets as they transition from the Muppet realm to a psychotropic dreamland. The song is a pleasantly slow buzz that slowly fades into the realm of electronica as the song progresses! Enjoy!

Watch: Short Documentary "From the Fringes, To the Forefront"

In 2012, before Britain finally legalized gay marriage, film students Isabelle Willaby, Zaid Thanoon, Rebecca Dudley, and Ray Shaahu made the wonderful short documentary "From the Fringes, To the Forefront." They have finally released it to the public. The ten minute mini-doc recounts what it was like to be gay in England in the 60s. Until 1967, being homosexual was a criminal act and men were often jailed if caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The film does a terrific job interviewing several aging Brits who were young adults living in the notorious Machester Village the 60s. They discuss the club scene, the police harassment, and the changing times as homosexuals finally started protesting the way they were treated. Towards the end of the movie, one of the men laments that too many of the kids today take their freedom to be openly gay for granted and do not even realize, or care to know, the historic struggles of the past generations.

Anyway, take ten minutes and watch this film. It's totally worth your time.

Watch: Suck-A-Thumb Trilogy by Gay Filmmaker Richard Mansfield

So, if you like fairy tales, if you like over the top campy story telling, if you like dark stories about kids behaving badly, you kinda owe it to yourself to watch Richard Mansfield's animated short film Suck-A-Thumb trilogy. It is a collection of parables warning kids of the dangers of misbehaving told through wonderfully crude puppetry and animation. The first Suck-A-Thumb film was screened as part of the London Lesbian Gay Film Festival (now FLARE). Since then, each of the two follow up films have become more ambitious in scope warning children to mind their Mothers or terrible things will happen.

The stories in the Suck-A-Thumb series are based on the German fairy tale book Der Struwwelpeter by German psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffmann. Mansfield explains:
The original rhyme of Suck-A-Thumb was one of my favourite stories growing up. The story of a young boy sucking seemed perfect to make into a camp horror animation that was both funny and cruel. It was great to be able to expand the story and turn it into a horror series. My dream is to turn the stories into a stop-motion feature film.
I think there is a strong sexual undertone to Suck-A-Thumb, whether it's intended or not by Hoffmann. The story is certainly is often read as masturbation by modern audiences. We played the sexual innuendo from the tale right up making it as rude as possible from the sucking of the thumbs in the first film to the erection-cutting off in the third one! One blog said the films were 'Explicitly homosexual' which we thought was fantastic.
Richard Mansfield is not alone in this undertaking. He and his husband Daniel, who voices the narrator and Mother in the Suck-A-Thumb trilogy, founded the production company Mansfield Dark in 2011. Together they've put out host of uniquely wonderful movies ranging from the outrageous comedy of ‘Showgirls 3’ to the chilling horror of ‘The Mothman Curse’. Their first official DVD release was LGBT period-drama 'The Secret Path.'  Coming 14th April is gay vampire thriller 'Drink Me'. You can watch 'The Secret Path' below!

If you would like to explore the Mansfield Dark films on your own, we suggest their Website, Facebook, and Twitter! Otherwise, enjoy the trilogy below! And be sure to check out their trailer to The Secret Path!

This Gay Life: A Coming of Age Webcomic Series by Mark C. Lindsey

This Gay Life is a wonderful webcomic series by artist/illustrator Mark C. Lindsey about coming of age in the 80s. It is filled with illustrated tales of art school, clubbing, dating, and being a dirt poor student learning how to exist in this crazy world. Even better, it is infused with a New Wave/early Indie Rock sound track that totally sets the mood and tone for each episode. By this I mean, some episodes of the webcomic comes with an MP3 player featuring a companion song that is meant to be played as you begin reading. Sometimes, he offers a complete 80s mix tape. It really kinda makes everything even more fun! Mark has also started doing some basic animation versions of the webcomic, too.

Mark
Mark C. Lindsey is an artist and writer currently living in New York City. He is the illustrator of the children's book "Away and Back"(2011, Mark Lindsey and Diane Welker) and the author and illustrator of "Faces New York - A Series of Drawings from the Subways"(2012). According to Mark's own description, This Gay Life is a "comic book about some of the formative experiences of my younger self, is a work of fiction. All of the characters here have been created, combined, extrapolated, reversed or invented. Any character outside of myself bearing a resemblance to anyone living or dead is coincidental."

Like most artists, Mark tends to give limited information on himself. When we asked for a little bit of info on the inspiration behind This Gay Life, here's what he told us, "This Gay Life is a coming of age comic.  It will be in print,  but I love the digital aspect, that it lives on the web, and that I am starting to use animation more. Season 3 is nearly up, and there will be a 4th."

If you would like to learn more about Mark, we suggest his websites ThisGayLife and markclindsey.com, his vlog This Week In The Culture, and #facesnewyork.

The Lavender Effect: Preserving LGBTQ Culture Through Oral History

We are at a really interesting point in gay history. Gay rights and gay marriage will soon be the norm and all of the struggles and battles fought over the last fifty to sixty years will inevitably become a fading memory. Heck, a lot of younger people aren't even aware of how much the older generations sacrificed to get us to this point in time.

This is where The Lavender Effect comes in. The Lavender Effect is a California based non-profit whose mission is to "document LGBTQ people’s history and contributions to society, demystify the spectrum of human sexuality, and celebrate the essential benefits of diversity."

To this end, they have started The Lavender Effect’s Oral History Project. The OHP captures video testimonies from members of the LGBTQ community and supportive allies who were integral participants or witnesses to a historic event or movement. They oral histories come from activists, politicians, publishers, ministers...everyone on the front lines in the battle for our civil rights. Their is a rush to record many of these folks before we lose them to old age. Watch some of the videos below!

Of course, their mission doesn't end with just oral history. They plan on opening a headquarters with a sound stage, performance space, gallery space, workshops, and museum.
There is an urgent need to to educate both our young people and the population-at-large of the positive impact LGBTQ people have on civilization. Our visibility has never been greater and yet many people are living in fear and hopelessness. Though we have made enormous strides over the past half-century, homophobia still exists, and the global epidemic of disenfranchised gay teens continues.
Learn more about The Lavender Effect at their Website and Facebook page!

TROY PERRY is the founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, a church known for celebrating and accepting the LGBTQ community. His personal story of coming out, to himself, his family and his church is touching and inspiring. After being told to resign as a preacher in a local church in Illinois, Perry thought his relationship with God was over. It wasn’t until after a suicide attempt that he had an epiphany; God wanted him to create a church for the queer community, and in1968 he did just that. Since then, MCC has grown significantly, reaching multiple cities internationally. He has preformed same sex unions as early as 1970 and ordained women as pastors since 1972. He has also been active in advocacy work, opposing the Briggs Initiative and Anita Bryant in the Save the Children Campaign in the ‘70s. He planned the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1979 with Robin Tyler and has even been invited to speak at the White House multiple times.

A trailblazing politician, SHEILA KUEHL, has served Los Angeles well and paid particular attention to vulnerable populations, including the LGBTQ community. She was the first openly gay politician to serve on the California State legislature, where she served out all possible terms. Currently running for LA County Supervisor, she has opened Kuehl Consulting, served as the Founding Director of Public Policy Institute at Santa Monica College and authored “Safe At School,” a policy white paper addressing the need for safe schools for LGBT students. Among many other causes, Kuehl has fought for over 171 bills that were signed into law, including legislation that has established paid family leave, established the rights contained in Roe vs. Wade in California statute, overhauled California’s child support services system, established nurse to patient ratios in every hospital, required that housing developments of more than 500 units have identified sources of water, furthered protection for domestic violence victims and their children, prohibited discrimination on the basis of gender and disability in the workplace and sexual orientation in education, and increased the rights of crime victims; safeguard the environment and drinking water.

Bill Rosendahl is not like your stereotypical politician. He is known for being quirkily and extremely nice, motivated by a need to give back to his communities. Representing District 11 in Los Angeles City Council for seven years he was also the first openly gay man elected to the LA City Council, making him LA’s highest ranking LGBTQ official. He is well known for making an agreement between LAX and nearby neighborhoods that prevented unwanted airport expansion. Outside of politics, Rosendahl is known for his work as a television broadcaster for public affairs shows like Local Talk and Beyond the Beltway. From 1969-1971 he also served as a counselor in the US Army for soldiers returning from Vietnam. Over the years he has served on multiple boards and commissions and has been the recipient of multiple awards including the Los Angeles League of Women Voters’ “Public Service Award, James Madison Freedom of Information Award” and the “Cable Ace Award.”
