Androidify Yourself and Join Android's Online Gay Pride Parade

It's really wonderful how many large corporations are openly showing support for the LGBT community.
Perhaps the most entertaining of these right now is Android. A few days ago they turned their Androidify website into a gay pride parade. You can create and Android version of yourself (actually you can create numerous versions of yourself) and then place that character into the parade. They offer an impressive array of outfits, hairstyles, and accessories to chose from. Also, you can download your character and post it anywhere you'd like without having to give out any personal info at all. They don't ask you to sign up for anything, not even a mailing list. It's pretty cool. If you do post on social media, use the #andproud tag!

Anyway, if you have five minutes to waste on fun, go check out their website. And be sure to watch the video below. The parade is up for a few more days, so you best get moving!

Here's some we made of ourselves and a one or two that caught our eye!

M Is For Monster: The Illustrations of Kimiaki Yaegashi aka Okimi

I absolutely love Japanese artist Kimiaki Yaegashi aka Okimi's art. I have been following his crazy monsters and pizza infused illustrations since the mid-2000s back when it was still fashionable to store your photos on Flickr and Facebook was only for college students! When I emailed Okimi for permission, I got the following adorable response, "I am happy that you like my works. And I accept your request."

Based out of Tokyo, Okimi's professional career began in 1998. His art has been used all across the world in magazines and websites and on pretty much any kind of merchandise you can imagine. In 2013, his first book Nippon Clipart came out. And in 2014, Okimi had a prestigious solo exhibition called "OCTAGON"  in Berlin as part of Pictoplasma Festival.

Right now, if you hurry, you can get in on Okimi's latest project: MONSTERIZE!  Okimi will turn your face into pretty much any monster of your choice. Commissions close on June 30th, though, so don't procrastinate!

If you want to go explore the wondrous world of Kimiaki Yaegashi on your own, I suggest his Website, Tumblr, Twitter, Behance, and Facebook. Or, if you have a few dollars, go buy yourself something awesome at his Society 6 shop!

HeroesCon 2015 Wrap Up + Loot Crate Giveaway Winner Announcement!

So, HeroesCon 2015 in Charlotte, NC was a blast...even though they had Stan Lee blocked off from public view! Only those paying to get an autograph or take a photo got a glimpse of him. Oh well...maybe next time. But, Matt Fraction was there rocking it as usual. And, our Treklenburg Podcast folks had a great time interviewing random Klingons and Vulcans. All in all, we had a great time.

But now, the announcement many of you were waiting for. Out of hundreds and hundreds of entries, one lucky winner has been chosen in our 3 Month Free Loot Crate Subscription Giveaway!

And the winner is...

Michael K. of Charlotte, NC

No worries if you didn't win, we will be announcing a new giveaway in the coming weeks! In the meantime, rather than posting a bunch of photos, we made this montage video of some of the cosplay we encountered. This was shot by a duo of goofy staff photographers Lee and Tyler. The video was put together by Brian of Bazinga Productions. Ya, we put a Belle and Sebastian track behind it. We will put up a link to the full album when we are done processing all the photos.

Book Preview: Stroke - From Under the Mattress to Out in the Open

In July, publishing house Bruno GmĂ¼nder is releasing Stroke, a really fascinating compilation of gay illustrations used in magazines from the 1950s to the 1990s. Some erotic, some inflammatory, all images give us perspective on how the portrayal of homosexuals has evolved throughout the course of history.

Here's the official description:
A historical retrospective on erotic magazine illustrations from the 1950s to 1990s. Although the magazines in the US were freely accessible, the reader often kept them hidden under their beds.
Stroke revives these historical treasures along with the stories of the illustrators and other unknown artists drawings. Stroke has been compiled by the Director of the Leslie-Lohman Museum, Hunter O'Hanian, and legendary artist Robert W. Richards. The book presents the works of over thirty artists, including famous names like Tom of Finland, Harry Bush, Michael Kirwan and George Quaintance.
Robert W. Richards began his career as an illustrator for the fashion world. He has worked for fashion giants Yves St. Laurent, Valentino and Gaultier. He has rendered portraits for Hollywood stars like Cher and Tony Curtis and contributed to many gay magazines.

Hunter O’Hanian is the director of Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian art. Previously Hunter served as vice president of institutional advancement and executive director at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

In July, you can get a copy of Stroke - From Under the Mattress to Out in the Open from Bruno GmĂ¼nder. Or, here in the US, it might be easier to get a copy from Amazon. Either way, you can't go wrong. Stroke is a wonderful look into the past.

Must Watch: Teaser (2015) Short Film

If you have eight minutes, be sure to check out Adam Jones LGBT themed short film Teaser. It's a poignant and somewhat disquieting look into the surreal world of addiction and the road to seeking help. Those who have been through something like this will surely relate. Those who have never been afflicted by addiction may be left scratching their heads, but hopefully will still be able to take something away from this film.

Here's the description Adam sent us:
"Teaser" is an LGBT themed atmospheric 8 min silent short film, based on a young gay mans journey into the drug scene. The story is inspired by my experience in the gay scene and the path to destruction in a 9 month meth binge. The video captures the LGBT community in a darker light through montage and surrealism. I've been volunteering at local LGBT community centers and I know that a lot of young gay men are suffering from addiction. The message of " Teaser" is making a dark time of your life into something good and beneficial. Whether it be music, art, writing, film, or performing. There are so many outlets to making something great out of a shitty time. 1 year sober as of May 27th. I want to inspire our LGBT youth.
But, we wanted to know more, so we reached out to Adam Jones and he was kind enough to answer a few questions about his film.

Q: What was the breaking point that made you decide to get sober?
Adam: Like any other young man (gay or straight) we are searching to find ourselves. We all want to be happy, try new things, explore life with a care-free attitude at some point. In my road to discovery I ended up loosing touch with who I was. I came from a middle class family, life was good growing up. There was no reason why I chose to live in a crack house, or smoke meth everyday. I decided to get sober when I realized my mental state was becoming a problem. Physically and mentally I was very sick, I escaped to a beautiful world in Napa,CA and found myself again.

Q: Has making the film helped with your recovery?
Adam: It's therapeutic to me and has helped push me in a good direction. Its nice to go online and search "drug addiction in the LGBT community" and dozens of links to the short film appear. It's nice to get recognition for my success, it's personal... it represents my experience as a whole. The opening of the film we revisit an apartment complex I used to hang around a lot. Everything in the short film is symbolic and has a meaning. I created a video that represents my path to darkness, and redemption. My recovery turned into a creative video project that shaped me as an underground experimental filmmaker.

Q: What kind of feedback are you getting from others battling addiction?
Adam: To be honest, I'm blacklisted from most pages on Facebook supporting gay men and recovery. My film's trailer was misconceived into something negative earlier this year. As recovering addicts, we immediately turn our heads the minute we see a trigger. "Teaser" is full of them. But I've built to a group of artists who completely understand the messages of addiction in the video which makes me happy.

You can expect a trailer for Adam's next film with a full crew coming up in September. And, be sure to subscribe to his Vimeo channel to keep up with all of his latest projects.
